POEM: Do I need to hold my breath to receive you?

A poem by Jana van Niekerk

BY JANA VAN NIEKERK

How did Adam and Eve live in the garden? Chiefly, without worry.
They were in communion with bliss. (This is good for me.)
They used their senses. They followed their impulses.
God took care of tomorrow (if they knew what that is).
There is the Khoi, swimming in the Southeaster.
We are all fallen angels.

What did they say? They said don’t eat this apple.
The apple is the smear of earthy shame.
The wind is blowing. Mamma’s eating chocolate biscuits.
Because I am rebellious. Because it takes humility to receive.
Because I wanted to see more.
