cat out of the bag by Sue Woodward

POEM: cat out of the bag

A poem by Sue Woodward

BY SUE WOODWARD

when the cat was let out of the bag
the night mrs next door
came knocking for an onion
she fled (the cat)
like a fat glob of mercury
shapechanging slipsliding down the stairs
into the neon streets
i followed her quicksilver prints
and found her in the light
giving an interview (already)
to men with bullet heads and steel pens
no comment i yelled
going in with elbows drawn
it’s a lie, a conspiracy,
and stuffed her in the bag
with promises of tuna and a retraction
