The self-taught Gerard Sekoto was one of South Africa’s finest artists. Born in 1913, he moved to France in 1947, where he died in 1993. In 1973 he wrote and illustrated Shorty and Billy Boy, a tale of two mischievous dogs for children. Sensitively adapted for a modern readership, the book was published for the first time this year.
