PHOTOBOOTH, presented by AERODROME, is a collection of photographs of top authors – both local and international – that were taken by photographer Gareth Smit at the 2013 Franschhoek Literary Festival.
AERODROME launched on 1 July 2013 as a platform to showcase and celebrate words and people. And what better way to do so than through the powerful medium of photography? Every year, the Franschhoek Literary Festival draws top writing talent from South Africa and beyond. We set up a studio at last year’s festival to make use of this stunning opportunity to capture a visual record of some of the great personalities we have in the world of words today. This is a diverse and colourful cross-section of literary life: the portraits include historians, poets, novelists, journalists, a cartoonist and a critic. Some names and faces will be familiar, others you might have never encountered, but collectively they represent the power words have to inspire, question, challenge and explore.
The exhibition contains 32 portraits and runs from 16 May 2014 until 1 June 2014 at Ebony (4 Franschhoek Square, Huguenot Street, Franschhoek). The portraits can also be viewed in our online gallery at aerodrome.co.za/photobooth.
In addition to the images printed for the physical exhibition, there will also be an edition of 10 mounted A3 prints of each author portrait (on condition the author has provided permission), available for purchase by the general public for R1850 per image (this excludes delivery costs). For more information contact photobooth(at)aerodrome.co.za.
Gareth Smit is a freelance photographer based in Cape Town. His work has been published both locally and abroad (including by the Cape Times and Cape Argus, the International Herald Tribune and the Associated Press). Smit was awarded Silver in the News category of the 2011 Fujifilm Professional Awards.
AERODROME gratefully acknowledges the support of the Franschhoek Literary Festival and wishes to thank all the writers who participated in this project.
